Description

The BookViral Review:

This book of poems is written in the reflective narrative style. It ultimately succeeds in its aim: to inspire & stir emotion.

Sunrise of Thought by Bruce A. Humphrey is a heartfelt and moving poetry collection that dives deep into the human spirit. Spanning themes of war, love, sacrifice, family, fear, and perseverance, this book reflects a sincere and compassionate voice that encourages reflection on the world around us—and within us.

From the very first pages, Humphrey invites the reader into an emotional journey. In poems like Want or Will and A Day in June, the voices of soldiers and survivors are brought to life with vivid emotion and powerful imagery. The author’s ability to channel both personal and collective experience creates a strong emotional connection with readers. These poems ask big questions—about courage, survival, and unity—that linger long after reading.

Central to this collection is the idea that even in our darkest hours, the human heart continues to strive for light. In pieces such as The White DoveRain, and To Touch the Sky, hope is not just an abstract idea—it becomes something tangible, something we can reach for, if only we’re willing to look upward. Humphrey’s words gently remind us that no matter how broken the world may feel, compassion and strength can still rise.

Family, memory, and love are also recurring themes. Brothers, Sisters, Sons, and Daughters and Parents pay tribute to the powerful bonds that keep us grounded. These poems are filled with warmth and gratitude, portraying family not just as a personal anchor, but as a fundamental piece of what makes life meaningful. Likewise, pieces like LoveTwo, and Photographs and Memories offer tender reflections on connection and affection that many will find deeply relatable.

One of the strongest qualities of Humphrey’s poetry is its clarity. The language is direct and sincere, and that simplicity allows the emotion to come through without obstruction. Whether he’s writing about the quiet power of silence, the weight of war, or the joy of music, Humphrey’s poems speak plainly and honestly, making them accessible to readers of all backgrounds.

There is a sense of timelessness in this work. Poems such as ResolveWhispers, and Good and Evil tackle enduring moral and societal questions—What does it mean to stand firm? How do ideas take hold? What path will we choose? These questions are as relevant today as ever, and Humphrey presents them not to dictate answers, but to encourage thought.

Sunrise of Thought ultimately succeeds in its aim: to inspire, to stir emotion, and to encourage deeper reflection. Bruce A. Humphrey writes not as an observer, but as someone who has felt these truths firsthand. His words carry the weight of lived experience, yet they offer a vision that is hopeful, forward-looking, and human at its core.

This is a collection that invites readers to pause, to consider, and to feel. Whether exploring courage, grief, unity, or love, Bruce A. Humphrey’s poetry reminds us that we all have a role in shaping a better, more compassionate world.

About The Author

The biggest influence on my writing was my teachers in school. To me, teachers move the future. They had the class read books such as To Kill a Mockingbird, The Odyssey, Great Expectations, and Tom Sawyer. I read great short stories including To Build a Fire, my favorite, and many other classics. If I had a book that influenced my life it would probably be 'Mutiny on the Bounty' because its theme is men standing up for what is right and fair. Writing extensively in the past several years I have created 12 screenplays ranging from fantasy, adventure, science fiction, drama, and romance. I have also created an animation series about talking polar bears and their families. I have written a television pilot with the same characters as the full features. Craftsmanship and woodworking are in my background. I have made twelfth-inch scale miniature houses, windows, doors, floors, furniture, and cabinets that would be found in a Victorian house. In addition, I constructed, out of wood, a one-quarter-inch scale version of Monticello and its grounds and brought many customers' childhood dreams or homes to life. Growing up my family moved from place to place due to my father's work. I believe that adversity instilled a sense of grit and resilience in me and a sense of great responsibility toward my family. I live in northern Illinois with the love of my life, Janet, three grown children, and three grandchildren.
