About The Author

Rev. Kent is a second generation Ordained Elder in the United Methodist Church. He grew up in the southwest quarter of Kansas as his father, a relatively progressive pastor, theologically speaking, was appointed to a number of churches in Kansas. Kent began his journey into ordained ministry at the age of thirty-two, as served eleven churches in eight appointments over his thirty-two years in the ordained ministry. The reflections, blogs, poems, prose, and other creations in this book have been inspired by those he has encountered along the way. Family, friends, teachers, professors, clergy, authors, theologians, acquaintances, creation, and creature. He has long enjoyed writing; it is a release, a form of therapy, a place to express hopes, frustrations, dreams, anxiety, faith, and a vision of a more just and compassionate world. In terms of writing in general, early on he was inspired by his own mother's poetry. In addition to her work, more specifically, his style has been inspired and influenced by authors and teachers such as Joseph Girzone and his Joshua series of books, Tex Sample and his story telling skill, and Robert Fulghum's work.

Sleep Loose; Reflections at the End of Day is a collection of missives written to reflect on the state of the world, the universe, cosmos, creation, and creature. The writings are borne out of the joys, struggles, celebrations, and heartaches of what it means to be human and care about the world in which we exist.

Description

The writings that follow in Sleep Loose; Reflections at the End of the Day, are meant as an invitation into the mystery of the cosmos and into the struggles, joys, difficulties, laughter, injustices, and justice making of the world and of our work as human beings to make this good green earth a little better and brighter. I was raised in a family that expected questions. I have often said my dad not only expected questions, but he also practically demanded them. One did not simply go along with the crowd in our family. I heard my dad tell me more than once, "You don't believe what you believe because your mom and I believe it; you find your own way and your own belief!" To some degree such a life experience made me more comfortable with mystery. Oh, not that I don't do my best to understand the things I am passionate about; however, there is only so much one can learn about a particular perspective or believe, and in my experience, once I have done my work to the best of my knowledge, then there is mystery and those oft dreaded words of, "I don't know." This, in part, is from where the words of many of my missives and reflections draw their cosmic images. The wonder of our cosmos and universe, what we can know of it, and what we either have yet to learn or perhaps will never know. The mystery of our existence as part of a whole of creation. My writings reflect a connection with all the cosmos. I believe we are all connected to all there is. This connection is from where I draw my understanding of the Divine; we are all immersed, all that is immersed, in this very Divine Presence. Thus, it makes sense to me, in this light, if we are all immersed in the same presence, we are all connected to one another, and the whole of the universe. We belong to this Divine Mystery, and we belong to one another. On a journey together toward a Beloved Community of justice for all, inclusion, welcome, compassion, equality, equity, grace, and love.
