Secrets or Lies

By David Meckler

Overview

Using the 'Jewish Quota" as its backdrop, Secrets or Lies weaves two love stories set seventy years apart. The first occurs in pre-Holocaust Vienna, and on the surface, it is a simple love story: two people fall in love, are separated by war, and never see each other again. In the present day, the grandchildren of the two lovers, living in different corners of the world, discover the diaries and love letters of their respective grandparents, forcing each to re-examine and question their own lives: was their grandparents' love for them genuine or a carefully crafted facade to something far more complicated?

Description

Using the "Jewish Quota" as its backdrop, Secrets or Lies weaves together two love stories set seven decades apart. In pre-Holocaust Vienna, a young couple falls deeply in love, only to be separated by war, politics, and fate. Their romance appears simple until letters and journals surface decades later. In the present day, their grandchildren—living in different corners of the world— uncover these long-buried documents and begin to question everything they believed about their family histories. Was the love between them and their grandparents genuine, or a carefully crafted cover for something far more complicated? As the past and present collide, the truth forces the grandchildren to confront issues of trust, identity, and the painful choices made for love and survival. The story unfolds into a poignant exploration of how secrets, often born of necessity or fear, can shape generations, blurring the line between concealment and deception. While some secrets protect, others destroy. It is now up to you, the reader, to decide the difference between a secret and a lie.

About The Author

With its publication, David is now rewriting his original screenplay of Secrets and Lies.
