Scavenger's Daughter

In a world where caste is all-important, a scavenger's daughter is supposed to follow in her parents' footsteps. But when she earns admission to a revolutionary school where lower- and upper-caste children mix, she chooses the name Sujata—"born of good lineage"—and determines to take control of her own fate. Sujata soon rises in the world, aided by intelligence, hard work, educators who believe in her—and a few necessary lies about her background. When she falls in love and marries a wealthy classmate; her life seems charmed . . . until revelations about her past threatens to destroy it all.
