RUN THE MUSIC

Stories From A Creative Journey

Overview

He was frustrated being a staff member always working on an agenda someone else set, and dealing with office politics.  He wanted something better.

Eager to change his path and pursue his own agenda and dreams, without sacrificing the things most dear to him, he summoned  the courage to step out on his own.

Ed Tar soon learned there's no single path to success.  "When you have a dream and are willing to fight for it," he said, "you're betting on yourself you'll win."  He did!

RUN THE MUSIC  takes us on his winding journey through tension-filled professional challenges, heart pounding achievements, and warm moments of joy with those most important to him, his family.

Description

Two years into moving to Los Angeles, married with one child and another to come, Ed Tar had just quit his steady job to become an Independent producer of corporate films and live shows. And the phone wasn't ringing. Such was the first rocky step in the remarkable journey detailed in these pages, a journey that, much like two musical cords finding harmony, chronicles the professional and the personal, the creative and the technical, the intimate and the inspirational. With his wife, Pat, also forging her own path in Hollywood, Tar went about building his business one hard-won handshake at a time. Together, they weathered the inevitable difficulties of balancing life, family and work -- particularly trying when work was hardly the typical 9-to-5 -- while availing themselves of not just career opportunities but soul-filling experiences, whether white-knuckling up a rock-face, summiting a mountain, or running multiple marathons. Many fear stepping boldly toward what they truly want in life. Can I pursue my path, they might ask, and still be a good parent or spouse? Should I even be a parent? Can I still enjoy life, when faced with the uncertainty of working for myself? How will I face unforeseen challenges? What if I fail? Tar's story serves as a rebuttal to these fears, as well as a reminder that life can be our own epic story -- if only we open the curtain, run the music, and stride with confidence onto the stage that awaits us.

About The Author

Ed Tar was born  Detroit, Michigan.   He was the sixth of seven children. With two parents and a grandmother  at home it was chaotic and often times negative with constant turmoil surrounding a lack of money, often times not enough to buy coal for the furnace to heat the house.

After receiving his high school diploma, a challenge in itself as half his siblings quit school before graduating, he decided to escape the toxic situation making the life-changing decision to enlist in the U.S. Army.

Following three years in the armed forces he returned home and enrolled in college, something he'd always desired.  College was never discussed at home growing up.

"The most memorable of all my college courses was my English class," he said.  "It was taught by a young author, Joyce Carol Oates, who challenged us every day introducing exciting new authors to read.  Her class turned me on to writing."

He launched his writing career as a journalist and anchor in radio and television news in Michigan and Ohio.

Moving to Los Angeles in the late 1970's his writing and thinking broadened.  He became an independent producer and writer of television documentaries, short films and live corporate shows.

His work has been honored with numerous awards from organizations across the U.S. including the International Film and TV Festival of New York, the U. S. Industrial Film Festival, the California Newspaper Ad Executives Association, and the Hollywood Angels Award honoring him for his stirring TV documentary, Kids, Dreams and Courage. His work has been featured in several magazines.

He currently lives in Los Angeles with his wife, painter and former actress Pat Gainor. Run The Music is his second book.

His debut memoir, Reaching For Fireflies is the powerful story of growing up in Detroit, and his gutsy decision to escape the negative, disruptive environment and find a better path in life.
