In the south, time is measured between hurricanes. She crept between Cuba and the Yucatan, parting the waves under a shroud of darkness. Only puddles from her rain, rumbling thunder, and debris on the beaches revealed evidence of her passing. Now, she was free.
After a summer of record-setting heat, the water of the Gulf of Mexico began to boil. She consumed the available fuel, sending giant clouds skyward to the edge of space. As her eye formed, her power increased. Like a hungry beast, she consumed the warmth of the Gulf and drove it skyward, increasing her appetite even more. Soon, she became one of the most feared forces of nature . . . Hurricane. Growing stronger each hour and with nothing to guide her, she wandered aimlessly in the central Gulf. Unaware of her existence, the coastline to the north lay sleeping like an innocent child. Her winds screamed louder and louder with each passing minute as she moved northward her banshee cries resonating across the Gulf and into the dark void of outer space above. A lifetime of communing with the sea told him that she would not turn away, and soon it would be too late
About the author
For his debut novel, Daryl Haskew transports the reader into the exciting, mysterious world of Portersville. Spending decades in and on Portersville Bay allowed for personal experiences sailing, building boats, and constructing log homes. The Spring Hill College graduate and retired educator blends fact and fiction into a powerful saga spanning twenty years among the characters of what is now known as Bayou La Batre, Coden and Dauphin Island, Alabama.

Portersville Let me begin this review by stating that I have known the author since elementary school. We were classmates through high school, teammates in sports and friends. I know the intensive historical research, as well as his lifelong experiences in the area sailing, fishing the waters and boatbuilding that went into this thoroughly enjoyable first novel. The story takes place during the late 1800s through early 1900s, mainly around Dauphin Island, Coden, Bayou La Batre Mobile and of course Portersville, all on the southwest Alabama coast. The locations and some of the characters are historically accurate. Daryl uses his childhood experiences on the Alabama coast and waters of Portersville Bay to paint vivid scenes of sailing the waters of the bays and Gulf. The story is so entertaining I had trouble putting the book down. It follows a young Greek couple, Cy and Selena Papatonis, from Greece to Florida and on to Dauphin Island and eventually Portersville. The book follows their family and friends in what was then the vacation spot of the south. Without giving the story away I will conclude by saying it includes family, love, Indians, evil men, murder, hurricanes and a little voodoo thrown in for spice. If you like a good book you will enjoy “Portersville”. Read more
