Overview

The purpose of this book is to help better understand the Okinawa Goju Ryu System of karate, as it was originally intended by exploring the old to understand the new (温故知新 Onkochishin). Our desire is to present a guide towards understanding the classical or old style (Koryū 古流) Goju-Ryu (剛柔流) Karate-jutsu (空手術) (not Karate-do 空手道) Kata and System from the Kenshikai lineage perspective. Goju-Ryu is a concept and self-defense based system influenced by Southern Chinese Boxing (Quanfa 拳法) specifically by White Crane Boxing. It also includes other animal systems as incorporated into the various Kata.

Description

We must analyze and interpret Kata with an understanding of its history and origins. The underlying concepts/principles of the Kata can be extracted if we understand the origins and the influences. One can equate this to Bunkai (分解); however, it goes much deeper than that. The concepts that we will attempt to seek are those of the classical Okinawan Karate (pre WWII era) where the focus was more on life preservation skills rather than on mental and physical discipline. A brief history of the development of Okinawan Karate and specifically GoJu Ryu is presented here. This is not intended to be an all-encompassing historical text, but rather provide some key historical facts to preserve the history without alteration or bias.

An essential work for any martial arts library Having purchased “Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate Jutsu: Concepts and Philosophy” a week ago, I have spent many hours reading, and re-reading, this extraordinary work that encompasses a wealth of historical and technical knowledge on Goju Ryu Karate Jutsu. The authors of this comprehensive text have skillfully provided a rare work that is exceptional in its scope and depth. The work is beautiful in its presentation, providing rare photographs of historical figures, documents, and places tied to the history of Goju Ryu. The research on key figures and the historical roots of Okinawan karate is exemplary. Richly detailed diagrams and charts provide a wealth of information. Philosophical foundations are explored and fundamental principles that are intrinsic to the higher levels of combative practice are clearly articulated. This book is an essential resource for any student of karate. Read more

Karate history and a deep explanation of it. Almost all Americans know the word Karate. Few have a true understanding of what it truly is. If you want to know, read this book. It may truly become the Bible of Goju-Ryu. This may well be the only English language book to delve as deep as the Authors have into the history of Goju-Ryu and an explanation of its complexities. Any Goju-Ryu student, or asian/Okinawan history student will need this book. Read more
