As a young comedian entertaining the troops during the Vietnam war, Barney is there to tell jokes to the battle-hardened troops who find very little humor in what they are doing. But Barney decides that laughter has a force all its own. So In the midst of the war's insanity he begins telling slyly subversive jokes that send the cynical young soldiers into waves of laughter that infuriate the fiery Colonel of the Airborne brigade. Even more dangerous for Barney is that he has fallen in love with a mysterious and beautiful young singer who is also there entertaining the troops—and who also happens to be the Colonel's mistress.
Laughing War builds to a confrontation of raw power against the force of laughter in a battle where both men use whatever power they possess. And when it is over each is a different person than when it began. As only one of them can return to the woman they both love.
