About the author
M. Scott Boring, I mean M. Scott Byers was born and raised on a tiny little farm on the outskirts of Dallas. The little feller liked to draw pictures of U.S. airplanes attacking German subs with all the sound effects, "Boom, bam bam bam." It was right after WWII and I was into foxholes and crawling with play-gun in hand and a rubber knife between my teeth. Now I cartoon Trump with sound effects, "You asshole...!"
My mom nurtured me, "those drawings are amazing!" As my brother was taking apart the radio (he became an electrical engineer). I drew through elementary and high school and played football and other healthier sports. The girls, wow! So cool. Women were and still are the absolute best.
I made good grades but had to study my ass off because I was stupid. Same for college, UT Austin. I "studied" fine art and graphic design. I always loved to cartoon. I mean LOVED it.
I married the finest girl ever known to man or woman. We were broke right away...with our little M* growing up with us. I was 21 when M was born. She was so neat. Our yearly income for a couple of years was like $5,000. Yearly. We eventually got our degrees. Jan teaching and me drawing pictures.
I was one of two ad agency art directors in Austin. There were only two ad agencies. I also worked in Dallas, but eventually headed back to the little college town, Austin. Then, everyone else came to Austin! I was lucky enough to work for great cartoonist, 100 pack a day, Windy Winn.
After about ten years of ad agency art directing (I was never very good). I started my own biz, eventually with my own illustration/graphic studio overlooking beautiful Barton Creek in Austin. We also lived there, raising two more very cool kiddos.
After about 30 years of ad crazy, working for clients like IBM, American Airlines and Dell, I pooped out and decided to "retire" to sports and political cartooning. I did cartooning for the Austin American Statesman as a freelancer. I was, "not exactly furniture" working with them and some good writers for ten years.
So after my wonderful Jan passed away and beautiful Sandy is a goner with Alzheimer's, I'm sitting in my studio at 79 doing a couple of political cartoon books because Trump drives me freak'n CRAZY! And all my pets have kicked the bucket. My kids and grandkids are incredible. I seem to be ok living alone. Whew.
I left off mountain climbing/hiking, kayaking, sailboat, tennis, cabin in Colorado and condo on the gulf and many surgeries. It's a wonderful life. Was.
I guess that's a biography? Boring.
