About the author

Dr. Hooman Rashidi is a leader in on-line education and a pioneer in incorporating digital educational technologies and tools in medical education, specifically in hematology and pathology. He is the co-founder and editor of Hematology Outlines, a leading resource for hematology education that includes a very popular free online Hematology Atlas and Glossary along with its top-rated companion iPhone and iPad Apps. These educational tools are now an integral part of various courses in several medical schools and Clinical Laboratory Scientist training programs. The online and App versions have received the highest reviews and have been used by students, residents, fellows and practitioners in the United States and abroad with over 200,000 users internationally since its inception. It has also been an American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) recommended suggested reading reference for Hematology certification for Specialists in Hematology and Technologists in Hematology since 2013. Dr. Rashidi is not new to the digital technology arena. Before medical school he was working on his graduate degree which was focused on Bioinformatics (specifically studying protein structures and structure prediction algorithms). That experience familiarized him with computer programming and several software tools that enabled him to author several popular textbooks in Bioinformatics. However, upon graduating medical school his passion for teaching led him down a different path which included developing and incorporating digital and technologic tools in the education arena. The most popular of which was the development of Hematology Outlines which incorporate various novel digital tools into their online site and their Apps. This project started back in 2011 at UC San Diego medical school’s hematology course along with Dr. John Nguyen when Dr. Rashidi was serving as the hematology course director. Over the next several years, the Hematology Outlines Atlas and its companion digital tools were well received by various Institutions in US (including its integration in the UC Davis medical school’s Hematology and Hematopathology courses when Dr. Rashidi joined the faculty in 2014 and had been serving as the Co-IOR of the course).

Dr. John Nguyen is currently Medical Director at Singlera Genomics, Inc. He received his Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Doctor of Medicine degrees from the University of Kansas. He completed a Pathology residency as well as fellowships in Surgical Pathology and Hematopathology at the University of California San Diego (UCSD). He also served as Chief Resident of Pathology at UCSD. Dr. Nguyen is board-certified by the American Board of Pathology in both Anatomic Pathology and Clinical Pathology. He was a staff Pathologist at Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego before joining Singlera Genomics. Dr. Nguyen has created many community, commercial, and academic-oriented websites and maintains his skills with the latest in cutting edge technologies, such as digital pathology. He has presented and lectured at several conferences, including International Medical Conferences at the highest tier hospitals in Shanghai and Beijing. Dr. Nguyen is also an avid computer programmer and developer with a strong interest in Medical Informatics, of which he contributed to innovative projects at Kaiser Permanente. He has previously worked as a program analyst, web developer, technical writer, and medical consultant. Since meeting Dr. Hooman Rashidi at UC San Diego in 2011, the two have worked together to further and facilitate the practice and teaching of hematology and hematopathology to students, residents, and clinicians all around the world.
