A reviewer for Vietnam Veterans of America noted that Hail and Farewell "adroitly blurs the line between memoir and novel." The book's plot ascends through rising action before and during Vietnam, climaxing with a racially charged murder, the end of an engagement, the loss of a commanding officer, and disbandment of the unit. Jodaitis's final assignment to an ammunition and fuel convoy unit culminates in an injury and medical-evacuation flight, marking the end of his convoy duty.

Vietnam made personal
The author was an engineer and I enjoyed understanding the conflicts of that period from a personal point of view as well as how it affected his life. Even though I lived through the time period, I learned in greater detail the reality of a soldier's life in Vietnam.
Great read!
thought provoking; lots of historical events and context
The Demise of the Triple Nickel
I served with LT Frank and his book is very accurate. After the 555th broke up, I went North to LZ Nancy.
Then, North to Dong Ha with the 178th DS Paint Co, I was very close to Fred. Still am. John

An Exceptional Insight of an Exceptional Era
My age and my U.S. Army career, including a tour in Korea, allows me to relate intimately with Frank Jodaitis' account of a very difficult period in our history. His attention to detail and personal narrative make for very interesting reading.
