Overview

As Gus settles into bed and drifts toward dreamland, his mother wonders about the world he enters when his eyes close. Does he soar through the sky like a phoenix? Swim among the stars? Explore faraway places and make friends along the way? And, perhaps most of all, does he use his voice? Good Night, Gus takes us on a journey where Gus is free to adventure, choose, explore, and be anything he wishes. But beneath every question is a mother's greatest understanding: Gus is not waiting to become more whole. He is already perfect, exactly as he is. His sounds, cues, expressions, and unique way of communicating are enough. His way is enough. He is enough. A tender celebration of nonspeaking children and the families who love them, Good Night, Gus reminds us that communication takes many forms –and that sometimes the deepest kind of love is spoken without words at all.

Description

As Gus settles into bed, his mother gently tucks him in and wonders what happens when his eyes close and his dreams begin. In the world of dreams, there are no limitations. Gus can soar through the sky as a phoenix, swim among the stars, command a great bubble ship, explore faraway places, and make friends along the way. He can choose where he goes, what he does, and perhaps most importantly, whether he uses his voice. His mother wonders what that voice might sound like. Would it be bold or squeaky? Would he have a little lisp? Would he tell his dreamland friends all about his adventures? She wonders because, like so many parents of nonspeaking children, she longs to know the thoughts, wishes, and dreams that live inside the child she loves so deeply. But beneath her questions is something even more profound: an understanding that Gus does not need to speak to be heard, and he does not need to change to be whole. Through his sounds, cues, expressions, movements, and unique ways of communicating, Gus is already telling his family who he is. His way is enough. He is enough. Good Night, Gus is a lyrical celebration of nonspeaking children and the families who love them. With warmth and wonder, it explores the limitless possibilities that exist beyond spoken language while honoring the many ways children communicate, connect, and express themselves. More than a bedtime story, Good Night, Gus is an affirmation of acceptance: a reminder that disability does not diminish a child's dreams, possibilities, or worth. It is an invitation to see, listen, and celebrate children for exactly who they are...and to recognize that sometimes the deepest and most enduring love is spoken without words at all.
