From SORE to SOAR

When Success Stops Feeling Like Enough

By Lisa DeAngelis PhD

Overview

You did everything "right." Built the career, hit the milestones, earned the title or the paycheck you once dreamed about. So, why do you find yourself asking, is this it? Have you started counting? Maybe not out loud, and maybe not on purpose. But you know roughly how many years stand between you and the day you're finally allowed to stop. You're probably managing appearances well. That's part of the problem. Think of the duck on the pond, elegant above the waterline, paddling furiously beneath. The exhaustion doesn't look like exhaustion. It looks like competence. The person who answers emails at eleven at night, who never drops anything, who channels unbearable feelings into spreadsheets and lists because doing something is easier than sitting with the discomfort. This book comes out of Dr. Lisa DeAngelis's doctoral research on how disruption reshapes us, and from the hundreds of leaders she has coached through this exact stretch. She calls where you are now SORE: Stuck, Overwhelmed, Resigned, Exhausted. Here's what you'll be able to do instead. • Trace your discomfort back to the value it's protecting, and decide from there • Discern your inner critic from your own wisdom, because only one of them has a way forward • Name what's in your way, and find the move you can make anyway • Gather a few people who are invested in your definition of success rather than their version of it • Run one small experiment this week instead of waiting for a certainty that isn't coming • Protect fifteen minutes a day, which is sixty hours a year spent on the life you want That path has a name. SOAR: Set your intentions, Optimize your obstacles, Align your resources, Reach new heights. Each chapter includes reflection questions, and Part Five turns them into a ninety-day plan. You stop living as a countdown. You've been waiting for someday. Someday isn't promised to anyone. What you have is now, and now is enough to begin.

Description

You did everything "right." Built the career, hit the milestones, earned the title or the paycheck you once dreamed about. So, why do you find yourself asking, is this it? Have you started counting? Maybe not out loud, and maybe not on purpose. But you know roughly how many years stand between you and the day you are finally allowed to stop. You're probably managing appearances well. That's part of the problem. Think of the duck on the pond, elegant and unhurried above the waterline, paddling furiously beneath where nobody can see. The exhaustion doesn't look like exhaustion from the outside. It looks like competence. It looks like the person who answers email long after everyone has gone to bed, who never drops anything, who channels unbearable feelings into spreadsheets and lists because doing something is easier than sitting with the discomfort. Here's what nobody tells you. Success stops feeling like enough not because you've achieved too little. It stops because you outgrew the definition, usually without noticing. Researchers have a name for this moment. They call it a disorienting dilemma. Most of us call it a rough patch. From SORE to SOAR®: When Success Stops Feeling Like Enough comes out of Dr. Lisa DeAngelis's doctoral research on how adults transform, and from the hundreds of leaders she has coached through this exact stretch. Then her own arrived. On her fiftieth birthday, while finishing doctoral coursework on how disruption reshapes us, she was diagnosed with cancer. The subject became considerably less theoretical. Not long after, she and her husband sat in a financial planner's office and heard a perfectly sensible retirement plan: work until sixty-five and they'd be in great shape. She burst into tears. Surprising even herself. She liked her job. She just couldn't imagine another decade of it. The same dilemma runs through this book: the partner whose love of litigating gave way to firm politics; the director passed over after fifteen years, still asking what her dedication had been for. Drawn from Lisa's research and her coaching practice, their stories make one thing clear. This is a pattern, not a personal failing. You can get clear on where you are and what you want. What you may not have is a process that accounts for the weight you are carrying, and a plan that works with the life you have. Not a quick-fix questionnaire that leaves you wondering what to do next, or a program too intense to sustain. This book is that process. Each chapter includes reflection questions, and Part Five turns them into a ninety-day plan. The dragonfly at the center of these pages spends most of its life underwater, gathering strength. When the time comes, it doesn't escape the water so much as become something the water could never hold. The invitation here is not to abandon what you've built, but to use it as the foundation for what's next. You stop living as a countdown. You lay your head on the pillow at the end of a hard day, thoroughly spent, smiling, because the day was yours and you get to do it again tomorrow. You've been waiting for someday. Someday isn't promised to anyone. What you have is now, and now is enough to begin.
