FREEDOM is based on the true story of a former child slave in Sudan. When everything around him becomes dauntingly unfamiliar, this little boy chooses to focus on the thing most familiar to him—the animals in his care. It's a hopeful story of their journey to an unexpected place!

Young Bol Gai (bowl guy) lived in a peaceful Dinka village in southern Sudan—until the night his whole world changed forever! In a government-supported raid, his community was violently destroyed. He was captured, taken far away, and sold to the highest bidder. But this clever boy devised a way to deal with the brutal reality of slavery. Two things proved to be his saving grace:  the lessons he had learned from his mother and his special love for animals.

Jane began writing children's picture books while working as a child advocate for at-risk youth and their families in rural West Virginia. Her stories shine a light on basic human rights and animal rights. She and her husband have 5 children, 4 grandchildren, and a fun collection of rescue animals. Jane was presented with the WV Children's Task Force "Extra Mile Award" in 2011 for her work as an advocate and tutor.
