Florian the Fly Flies to Florida
by Petra Szmykowski-Britton
View author's profile page

Overview

A most unlikely hero emerges from a fly, whose sole purpose for leaving his native Germany was to enjoy a few weeks of sunshine and warmth. Little does Florian realize how his encounter with other species in Florida help him learn English, introduce him to the history and culture of this state, and help him find his real purpose in life. The story is written in English and German. It is an "upside-down" book, unique in that one half of the book is written in English, and when turned upside-down, the other half is written in German. It allows for the natural flow of the story, without interruptions of the translation that is a part of the book.

Description

In his very first adventure, Florian the Fly starts out being quite unhappy. The weather this summer in Germany is cold and wet, and considering that his lifespan is only 4 weeks, he seeks to find a place that is warm and sunny. Luckily for him, he learns about the triplets who are planning on traveling to see their aunt in Florida. With the help of an unlikely ally, he manages to accompany the girls on their flight to Florida. There he makes new friends, learns English, and discovers his new purpose in life. He gains a new power and becomes a hero to other insects who are threatened, endangered, or have found themselves far away from their native countries, longing to return home. Throughout his adventures, he learns new languages, discovers diverse cultures and makes lifelong friends. The stories in this series are written in English and in the language of the insect he rescues. Great for parents wishing to keep their children fluent in their native language while learning English or vice-versa.
