Overview

"Flanagan's Flight" is the sequel to Peter Cavalier's debut novel, "Bank Street". Jerry Flanagan takes us on a nostalgic, humorous and, at times, poignant romp through the 1980s. Some of the pivotal characters from "Bank Street" return and we are introduced to a new cast of colorful individuals who influence Jerry's life and career.

Jerry and Maria are newlyweds in 1978 and are adjusting to married life when the decade of the 1970s closes and gives way to the wild rollercoaster ride of the 1980s. We follow them along as they try to balance work and grad school, switch jobs, and grapple with the angst of buying a home and starting a family. Jerry, having moved to a big-city global bank, initially encounters difficulty adjusting to the changing reality of the banking industry of the 1980s, but eventually settles into a role better suited for himself. His traveling audit assignment ultimately leads him to uncovering the misdeeds of a rogue banker. He encounters turbulence at work and on the home front, and experiences a few close calls during his extensive travels around the country.

Description

"Flanagan's Flight" takes off where "Bank Street" ended in 1978. Newlyweds Jerry and Maria Flanagan take us on a turbulent ride through the 1980s, as they struggle to balance work and grad school, change jobs, buy a house and start a family.

After several years working in a Newark-based bank, Jerry's new job with a major international bank headquartered in New York City takes him on a journey through North America. Beyond the familiar territory of "Bank Street" (Newark and the Jersey Shore), his new assignment makes stops in Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle. After their Bermuda honeymoon trip, Jerry and Maria eventually visit on their own time California wine country, pastoral New England and upstate New York, among other venues.

Witness some of the seminal sporting events that took place during the 1980s: World Series games in New York and Philadelphia, March Madness, the 1980 Winter Olympics, and the first night baseball game at Wrigley Field, among others. As the world continues to spin out of control, some of the decade's defining moments are re-created: Three Mile Island, Chrysler's near-bankruptcy, the death of John Lennon, the Challenger explosion, the Exxon Valdez oil spill, Chernobyl, the leveraged buyout craze, Black Monday and the stock market crash of 1987, and to finish it off, the 1989 San Francisco earthquake.

Jerry experiences some wild rides and close calls during his extensive travels. One fateful flight on a rainy September evening turns into his worst nightmare, but he somehow emerges unscathed and a hero to the young woman he rescues. Jerry takes one last flight to the West Coast to wrap up his final audit assignment and to bring the curtain down on a renegade banker. Will he return safely to New Jersey, to the love of his life, Maria and their three children? Find out in "Flanagan's Flight".
