Fins and Feathers: Stronger Together

By Patrece Frisbee

Overview

Fins and Feathers: Stronger Together is a lyrical, ocean‑side picture book about eight animal friends and one wise whale who discover that every heart carries a unique gift the world needs. When their beloved inlet is threatened by waves of trash and rising danger, a problem too big for any one of them, each friend must decide whether to stay safely on the sidelines or step forward with the courage, wisdom, strength, or gentleness only they can offer. As Song the seahawk, Grace and Blu the herons, Pelly the pelican, Solo the tiny bird, Tipsy the turtle, Dahli the dolphin, Tee the manatee, and Essie the whale rise to help one another, their gifts braid together into a powerful, healing force for the sea they love. With warm, poetic text and luminous artwork, this story invites children and the adults who read with them to celebrate their one‑of‑a‑kind gifts, care for the ocean and its creatures, and remember that life's hardest waves are never meant to be faced alone—we are always stronger together.

Description

Fins and Feathers: Stronger Together is a luminous seaside picture book about courage, friendship, and the one‑of‑a‑kind gifts each of us brings to the world. Along the edge of a shimmering inlet, eight animal friends and one wise whale discover a truth that will change their lives: no one can face the biggest waves alone—and no gift was ever meant to stand by itself. Song the seahawk, Grace and Blu the herons, Pelly the pelican, Solo the little bird, Tipsy the turtle, Dahli the dolphin, Tee the manatee, and Essie the whale were all created with something special to offer. One sees from above, one brings wisdom, one carries courage, one offers calm. Some shine with playful energy, others with quiet, steady strength. Their inlet is their beautiful, beloved home—until one day the water fills with drifting trash, dangerous tangles of fishing line, and a rising fear that this time the problem might be too big. At first, each friend tries to help in their own way. They pick up what they can, push against the current, and do their very best. But as the tide keeps pulling in more trouble, panic grows, and two friends become trapped in a life‑threatening snare beneath the waves. When Essie's deep, trembling call echoes through the ocean—a "Call to Rise"—every creature must make a choice: Will I hold back in fear, or offer the brave, tender, hopeful gift that only I can bring? What happens next is a powerful portrait of teamwork, trust, and love in action. One by one, the friends step forward. They lean on each other's strengths, listen carefully, and learn to move as one unshakable team. Together, they rescue the trapped, restore their inlet, and inspire the humans nearby to notice, care, and join in protecting the sea. Blending gentle, poetic language with radiant, emotionally rich artwork, Fins and Feathers: Stronger Together helps children see themselves in every character—the bold ones, the quiet ones, the worriers, the helpers, and the hope‑keepers. It invites young readers to name their feelings, ask for help when life feels tangled, and recognize that their voice and presence truly matter. Perfect for bedtime reading, classroom circles, counseling and therapy spaces, and meaningful gift‑giving moments, this story opens the door to conversations about: Emotional resilience and asking for support Environmental care and respect for ocean life Celebrating differences as gifts, not flaws The power of community, faith, and rising together Fins and Feathers: Stronger Together is the first book in The Mighty Rise Series, a collection of gentle adventures that remind children—and the adults who love them—that hope is real, friendship is powerful, and we are always strongest when we choose to rise side by side.

About The Author

Dr. Patrece Frisbee is a retired physician specializing in mental health and addiction medicine on Hutchinson Island, Florida. For many years, she walked beside children, adults, and families in some of life's hardest seasons—listening to their stories, helping them find resilience, and reminding them that they never had to face the waves alone. After retiring two years ago, she began to weave those same truths into stories for younger hearts, inspired by the sea, the sky, and the creatures that share her coastal home. Patrece has also walked through her own seasons of deep loss and unexpected grace. Those experiences shaped her passion for creating stories that comfort, inspire, and gently remind readers of every age that their unique gifts matter. Her work is especially dedicated to kids who feel "different," highly sensitive, or unsure where they fit—offering them a safe place to see themselves as strong, worthy, and wonderfully made. When she isn't writing, Patrece can often be found with her wife and their two furry boys, Bayou and Romeo, watching seabirds over the inlet, listening to music, composing songs with the help of new technology, or creating cozy, welcoming spaces for others. She divides her time between home, family responsibilities, and the water she loves, always collecting new sparks of beauty and courage to pour into future stories. Fins and Feathers: Stronger Together is her debut children's picture book and the beginning of a larger vision: a series of gentle adventures that help young readers remember that hope is real, friendship is powerful, and we are strongest when we choose to rise—side by side, heart by heart, wave by wave.
