This publication provides summaries of current types of evaluations, settlement-based approaches, and interventions that may be available in your community. For some of these processes, there are no set guidelines or rules with respect to the process or the qualifications for the persons who can conduct them; however, the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts has developed guidelines for parenting plan evaluations in family law cases, guidelines for parenting coordination, guidelines for examining inter-partner violence, guidelines for child protection mediation, guidelines for court-involved therapy, guidelines for brief focused assessments, and model standards of practice for divorce and family mediation. With respect to the various types of evaluations, the authors encourage lawyers, judges and parents to consider the value of focusing on specific issues of concern and to explore and identify those professionals in their forensic mental health communities who are trained and experienced in the area to be examined and regarding the referral question to be answered.
