Richard's law career takes off when Dr. Uri Lashikov, inventor of a wildly successful ocular implant, hires him to manage his vast estate. Richard's investments on Dr. Lashikov's behalf are making the good doctor even richer, and Richard begins to see how he can take advantage of the money at his disposal. His personal life becomes complicated when he falls in love with Olivia St. Claire, a popular small city journalist. They carry on a whirlwind romance that deepens into love, but he can never marry her for reasons known only to him. As their lives become inextricably tied, she comes to suspect Richard's business dealings are not completely above board. Richard can't afford to ignore Olivia's suspicions. He is too embroiled in investment schemes that are missing from probate reports required by law. He decides to do something about Olivia, but his actions have a terrible ripple effect. Olivia finds herself facing a bleak and uncertain future and is in desperate need of legal help. Enter Detective Sunny Pereira, who has broken an historic gender barrier by becoming the first female Navy SEAL. Sunny senses that the State's "open and shut case" is anything but. Together with fellow SEAL Buddy Finch, she goes on the offensive against an all too avid detective for the prosecution. The story ends with a series of dramatic reveals in the packed courtroom where Olivia is on trial for her life.
