Description
Magical realism permeates this story of two misfit climbers who encounter more than they bargained for while climbing in a haunting Utah canyon. Terry Lockton, no longer young, but not yet old, finds in climbing an antidote to his disaffection with society. And the strangely coincidental and untimely deaths of three friends has forced Terry to concede that life is fleeting and moments must be seized. But his evolving responsibilities to his family are leading him away from his passion for climbing, and into the heart of a lifestyle for which he is ill-equipped. How will Terry cope with the suffocating demands of a workaday world if he loses the source of his inspiration? Will he be able to abandon climbing, and still retain his sense of self? These questions must be answered, but Terry has no answers. His partner, Henry “Hacksaw” Montgomery – an aging, itinerant climber – uses his obsessive pursuit of the next adrenaline rush to stay one step ahead of a tragic past haunting his every adventure. But memories full of regret are like gravity, omni-present and unrelenting. What will give him the strength to shake his demons and move on? Set in the timeless, expansive canyon country of Southeastern Utah, the tension in this tale of climbing, choices, and ancient ghosts will inexorably bring you to the edge of your seat, and keep you there until the last page is turned.
About the author
S C Thompson was born in 1949 in Chicago, Illinois. Though never an elite climber, S C enjoyed the privilege of climbing extensively in the western U.S. from 1979 to 2004. Sometimes in the later years he felt Brad was there when he climbed. S C, his wife Meg, and their Bloodhound/Labrador mutts, Kokomo and Chadou, make the most of each day, though the pooches are better at it than the humans.
