Overview

During the mid-to-late 1970s and the beginning of the 1980s, this book is a reflection on a life lived on the streets of Northeast Philadelphia, but this is not just my story. This book is a chronicle of true stories, with a place, a time, and a community. This book is a testament to the raw, unfiltered lessons that were learned on asphalt and concrete and through the joyous collaboration of childhood games and family work ethics. The experiences within these pages are a testament to the idea that the greatest education often happens far outside of a classroom. The sciences of biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, industrial hygiene, and sustainability, as well as math, statistics, art, teaching, and psychology, are all incorporated into this story. The principles of mnemonics are also woven into the narrative to demonstrate how these lessons are remembered and have a lasting impact. This story, moreover, is a vivid tapestry created by the five human senses, where every sight, sound, touch, smell, and taste becomes an unforgettable, lasting imprint.

Description

Growing up in Northeast Philadelphia meant learning from the streets, the neighbors, and the everyday moments that shaped who we became. Long before smartphones and social media, childhood felt louder, brighter, and more alive. The blocks themselves taught lessons you carried into adulthood.

Northeast Philadelphia has always produced stories with grit, honesty, and heart. The neighborhoods, the families, and the street lessons passed down through generations have created a unique storytelling culture — one built on resilience and community. Readers searching for nonfiction tied to Northeast Philadelphia often want something real: memories, history, and the lived experiences that shaped childhood and character.

That is exactly where Catch Your Fall, As The Streets Teach All enters the conversation. This memoir captures growing up in Northeast Philadelphia during the late 1970s and early 1980s — a time defined by friendship, responsibility, street smarts, and the sense that every day taught a new lesson.

This story is an invitation to step back in time to a specific block in Northeast Philadelphia to experience a childhood shaped by the changing seasons, the unwritten rules of the streets, and the enduring bonds of family and community. This story is where street legends begin and where you will discover the power of resilience, creativity, and community to shape a fulfilling life. There was a time when the streets themselves were our playground, and on one of those long summer afternoons, the bottle caps began to fly…

Love reading this book I picked this book up expecting a coming-of-age story, but it honestly felt like someone opened a time capsule from my own childhood in Philly—the rowhouse steps, the corner chatter, the schoolyard blacktop, and that gritty-but-warm neighborhood energy where everyone knew everybody. The details are what make it hit: it doesn’t just say “we played outside,” it puts you right back in games like buck buck, hearing kids yelling, arguing rules, daring each other, and acting fearless even when they weren’t. It captures how Philadelphia shapes you without preaching—teaching you how to carry yourself, read people, and keep moving—while still showing the humor, loyalty, and watchful neighbors that made the city feel like home. By the end, it didn’t feel like a story set in Philly; it felt like I’d been there again. Thank you to the Author for excellent writing Read more
