A Memoir

Overview

Some places shape you. Some places stay with you. This is a story about both. At the corner of Liberty Street and South Loring in Lowell, Massachusetts, life unfolded in small, unforgettable moments: wiffle ball games in the street, snow days framed by frosty windows, laughter drifting across triple-decker porches, and quiet lessons that only time can teach. Funny, poignant, and true, Fran Coughlin's memoir captures the pleasures, challenges, and sorrows of growing up in a world that was far from perfect. A River Still Runs is a love letter to family, place, and the enduring power of memory. These stories are brushstrokes of a vanished world — one that still echoes, if you listen closely enough, in the spaces we carry with us long after we've left them behind.

About The Author

Fran Coughlin writes memoirs about family, memory, and the small moments that tend to matter more over time. His stories are rooted in growing up in Lowell, Massachusetts, on the corner of Liberty and South Loring, where life unfolded in a big, complicated family full of humor, miscalculation, and quiet lessons. He is the author of On the Corner of Liberty and South Loring, Tales from a Refrigerator Box, and A River Still Runs, a series of connected memoirs that revisit the same place and moments from different angles as time passes. For more than three decades, Fran has worked as a technical writer in the tech industry. He earned a master's degree in technical writing from Northeastern University and has also taught as an adjunct instructor. Now living with his family on the south coast of Massachusetts, Fran finds joy in the quieter rhythms of life: birdwatching from the front porch, sipping a cold beer, and sharing space with his loyal yellow Lab, Miss Dibbs. Through each book, Fran weaves together the small, meaningful moments that define us — with humor, honesty, and a deep appreciation for the places we carry with us.
