a drift

Many years before, a catastrophe in a Chicago suburb. A young girl dies in a hit and run accident. The victim known.  The perpetrator unknown. A crime unsolved, like so many others. Long ago forgotten by all, except those intimately involved. Until now.  

 Found on a thumb drive hidden in a hotel room during the Covid pandemic, “a drift” is the last testament of a self-loathing, former Chicago lawyer who was behind the wheel that fateful night. A confession from an unidentified man who once, tormented by guilt, was driven to make amends to the girl's family. A confession of the most tragic of love stories, of falling in love with the girl's mother. A love story shaped and formed from unimaginable loss, and the withholding of truth under the guise of protection. 

In “a drift,” the tormented narrator embarks on one last journey; one last drive to right an unimaginable wrong. A final exploration of a moment’s infinite repercussions, a final attempt at courage, a final understanding of how the world is forever altered by a breath, a twinkle, a drift.
