Description

This book in the colourful Pilgrim's Guide Series follows the 'must see' sites, pre-Christian and Christian, the wealth of art and architecture to be included on every pilgrimage to Rome, and suggests further exploration as time allows. In the 'Eternal City' of Saints Peter and Paul, practical information includes how to attend a Papal Audience, and the locations of the sites and public entrances. There is a detailed description of St Peter's Basilica and the Vatican Museums. There is a guide to the sites in and near Assisi associated with Saint Francis and Saint Clare, including a detailed description of the Basilica and each of the 28 frescoes depicting the Life of Francis. Then the author takes the opportunity to explore the lives and locations of three more Umbrian saints, Benedict, Rita and Valentine. Several additions to a Rome itinerary are explored: Loreto, San Giovanni Rotondo and Monte Cassino. Then there are the world-famous attractions of Florence, Pisa, Venice, Pompeii and Herculaneum, and the Amalfi coast. Finally there are pointers to the festivals and fiestas of which Italy has such a fine selection. Illustrated in full colour with maps and plans.
