Founded in Harlem in 2023, nommo books is an arts and cul-ture initiative to raise social consciousness through thoughtful-lycreated and accessible publications and programs. nommo draws inspiration from and acknowledges the important work ofliterary institutions operating under the same name, includ-ing the NOMMO Literary Society of New Orleans, the Nommo journal of UCLA, and the Nommo Black Writers Collective of Chicago. The term itself is a Latin-script approximation of a word spoken by the Bantu people of central and southern Afrika, referring to the power of language to bring positive change to the world—the word manifested to reality.
