This novel was written from a simple but enduring question…what happens to the stories never told? At its heartbeat Harold James is a man shaped by war, poverty, silence and a life lived between what was endured and what was never spoken. From the beaches of Normandy to a quiet park bench decades later, Harold James carries his past the way many of us do…not loudly, but by faith fully and often alone. Opposite him is Charlotte, (Charlie for short), a woman listening, through their unlikely connection, the story unfolds in fragments, a memory , a conversation and most importantly, silence, revealing that healing does not always arrive with quick answers but sometimes through the simple presence of another person willing to listen.  Woven throughout the novel are recurring symbols, a weathered bench, a small white gazebo, the distant echo of bells, that serve as a reminder that even life’s quietest moments something very meaningful is unfolding.  While the “when the bell fell silent “ touches of war, loss and regret, it ultimately is a story of redemption and human connection and the quiet courage it takes to face one’s own personal story.  My book has already resonated deeply with many of my friends and family, particularily  veterans and deep faith Christian’s who have experienced loss, many of whom who have shared with me that the story gave voice to a feeling they themselves have never fully expressed.  It is my hope that this novel offers not just a story but a moment to pause in life, to reflect and to perhaps listen more closely to the stories around them.  Because some stories are told in words and others are carried in silence….waiting for someone willing to listen
