Akribos Press is an imprint
dedicated to making available to the public opinions and perspectives, in
well-researched, prepared and thoughtful forms, on matters spiritual, social
and philosophical to which they have not been previously exposed, from authors
with new voices and with fresh ideas that might not be appreciated, or left
intact in their original nature by other publishing venues. “Akribos” is
translated in English in Thayer’s Greek Lexicon as “accurately” or
“diligently,” or as in the case of the King James translation of Ephesians
5:15, as “circumspectly.” The goal is to publish narratives that exhibit the
principle of “circumspectness,” or the pursuit of holistically “looking at all
sides” of a matter or issue, to discern the true nature of the circumstance. In
fact, Merriam-Webster defines the
term “circumspect” to be “careful to consider all circumstances and possible
consequences: prudent.” It appears to be related to the Latin word circumspicere— “to look around.” Just as
“first in” Special Forces may parachute or repel from a chopper into an open
field behind enemy lines, looking in 360 degrees around them to quickly assess
opportunity or danger, and friend or foe hidden in the brush, Akribos Press authors make efforts to
look in directions that others might have missed, and digest the full measure
of understanding on complex topics, or supplement them with missing
intelligence data and uncovered relationships. This pursuit has an unabashed
and essential philosophical and spiritual component, or as St. Paul wisely
advised the Church at Ephesus,
See then that ye walk
circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days
are evil. Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the
Lord is.
