I am a lifelong resident of the upper Great Lakes basin. After graduating from Michigan State University, I became a social worker and specialized in services to the mentally ill. Changing careers in midlife, I became one of Michigan’s leading advocates for environmental causes. I lobbied for public policy improvements in air, land, and water use. I defended wildlife habitat and was an early proponent of climate protections and sustainable business practices.
Now I am a memoirist and writer of fiction. My work examines aspects of the American character and mythos. Legally blind, I write with the help of assistive technology. I live with my wife Susan and our two cats, Ursula and Theodore.
