Born in New York City, Acosta began his professional career as a journalist for the award-winning weekly newspaper The Bronx Times Reporter, covering hard-news stories and writing editorials. Subsequently, Acosta founded the New Canaan Institute of Reflexology and Holistic Health in Connecticut, teaching others the intricacies of the art. His clients included several famous individuals such as former New York City Congressman Mario Biaggi, fashion designer Eli Tahari and, Eric Butterworth, world-renowned Unity minister, radio personality motivational speaker and, author of Discover the Power Within You.
