Michael Ryan is a career journalist, speaker and author of the internationally published book The Last Freedom, a novel on legendary Holocaust survivor Viktor Frankl. He has studied and spoken on civics for several decades.
A native of Kansas City, Michael joined the nonprofit Herzog Foundation in February 2022 to become executive editor of The Lion, the foundation’s national online education news site. The site received the 2023 Award of Excellence in Newspaper-Online News (Digital) from the Evangelical Press Association.
Michael was formerly a reporter and editorial page editor at the Topeka (Kansas) Capital-Journal, editorial page editor of The Augusta (Georgia) Chronicle, and opinion editor at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram before joining the editorial board at his hometown Kansas City Star in June 2019.
He has been named best editorial writer multiple times in Kansas and Georgia, as well as in Texas during his partial year there.
Michael has an incredible wife, Susan, and two grown children, Amanda and Kevin.
