Michael Herbert is a retired Professor Emeritus of Criminal Justice from Bemidji State University (Minnesota). Michael grew up in a military family and lived in several countries and states while growing up as his family moved from base to base. 

Michael was a first-generation college student and attended Bemidji State University in the late 1970's. While there earning his degree in Criminal Justice he participated in the Marine Corps Platoon Leaders Class (PLC) Officers training program at Camp Upshur, Quantico. 

Upon completing his bachelor's degree Michael went into 22 years of law enforcement, serving as a State Trooper, City Patrolman and 20 years as a Deputy Sheriff. The last tens years of law enforcement he was the Commander of a Multijurisdictional SWAT team. During that same time he earned a Master of Arts degree in Applied Behavioral Science. After the completion of his Master's degree he started teaching as an adjunct professor at his alma mater.

In 2004 Michael retired from law enforcement and took a tenure-track position at Bemidji State in the Criminal Justice department. In 2006 he earned his Ph.D. in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education from the University of North Dakota. 

After teaching 13 years as an adjunct professor and 19 years full-time Michael retired in 2023. 

"They Answered the Call" is Michael's second book, his first being "Leaving Campus A WWII Epitaph", recounting the stories of 20 Bemidji State Teachers College students who volunteered for Military Service during WWII, and who were later killed in action.

Michael currently resides in northern Minnesota with his wife Deborah of 41 years. They have two adult children. Michael is a member of the Ralph Gracie Post #14 of the American Legion, where he serves on the Honor Guard and is currently the post Adjutant.

Michael enjoys military history and restoring WWII military vehicles. He also enjoys gardening and travel.
