I was born in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico in 1974. I grew up in Southern California. My first language was Spanish. I remember having so many conflicted feelings about starting school. My First Grade teacher seemed so frustrated with me because I could not speak well in English. I still remember the way that made me feel; alone and frightened all at once. My Second Grade teacher was much more patient with me. Miss Hess. I remember how wonderful success in speaking a new language felt and how amazing it felt to be able to read and understand my first book by myself. Today, I hope to help other students realize their full potential. I have been an elementary school teacher since 1997. I still greet students each day with their secret handshakes. I live with my wonderfully supportive husband Fernando and two dogs, Remington and Zoey.
