News

We are publishing a book about the salmon canning industry in the early 20th century, the book is about the corruption of the Chinese contract system and the scandal of the Alaska and West Coast salmon canning industry in the 1920s. The title of the book is The Price of Salmon, and it is a compilation of 37 articles, written by reporter Max Stern, first published in 1922, in SF Daily News.

You may not have heard of Max Stern, but his articles caused quite a sensation when they were first published a hundred years ago in 1922. In some ways, this book is similar to the 1906 classic novel The Jungle by Upton Sinclair, which is a shocking revelation of working-class poverty and their harsh living and working conditions in the meatpacking industry in Chicago. This book is similar, it is an investigative reporting of the migrant workers in the salmon canning industry and the deplorable hiring practice,  working and living conditions that existed in the 1920s. This book had a big effect on the salmon canning industry; it generated much attention which led to the eventual demise of the Chinese contract system in the late 1930s.

The book will come in both printed version and eBook. Both will become available at Amazon Books, Barnes & Noble, Bookbaby Store by early June, 2022.
