Author Info
Melanie Pereira, was born and raised in New Bedford, Massachusetts, the youngest child of immigrant parents from the Algarve region of Portugal. The daughter of a fisherman, she learned at an early age the impact of separation and resilience in the face of uncertainty and what distance and longing can do to a child’s heart.

A devoted mother to her son, Alijah, Melanie credits him with teaching her the truest meaning of unconditional love. Her path led her into nursing, where she spent many years caring for others in both hospital and community care settings before pursuing her passion for mental health. Today, as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, she continues to walk alongside adolescents and adults through their most vulnerable moments, helping them rediscover hope and healing.

She wrote this book to offer understanding and healing to children facing similar challenges and give a voice to the quiet ache of separation. She hopes to reach the children and families who, like her younger self, are still learning how love endures even in absence or across distance.
