Allen is a retired English professor and dedicated amateur boxer. He has written several books on early medieval culture, including "Food, Eating, and Identity in Early Medieval England" (2014) and "Bloody Good: Chivalry, Sacrifice, and the Great War" (2004), and "Modern Masculinity: A Guide for Men" (2016).
