In 1968 R&B singer/songwriter Marvin Gaye & singer songwriter, arranger Bobby Scott met at a recording studio in New York City to record some ballads Mr. Scott arranged for Gaye at Gaye's request. Marvin thought Bobby Scott's arrangements were beautiful, however he didn't think his vocals measured up to the flawless arrangements he was hearing in his ears. As the story goes Marvin abruptly stopped the recording session never to return to the songs again, until 10 years later in 1979 when he completed and released the Bobby Scott recordings to his record company. They shelved the Ballad album, never releasing any of the songs until he passed away. Some of the songs from the "Bobby Scott Sessions" were released almost immediately after his death, (Romantically Yours 1985), another with more of the originals released in 1997 (Vulnerable.) The collaboration between the two men, Bobby Scott & Marvin Gaye birthed a new different kind of smooth sweetness to already beautiful ballads. Jazz in My Soul/A Marvin Gaye Fantasy is about those beautiful jazz ballads, and a “Woman” who is obsessed with them...and Marvin too!

She is a lover of jazz music and obsessed with those beautiful jazz ballads Marvin prepared (in her mind) to make his jazz debut, those songs that serenaded her every night before falling off to sleep. But only in April would the dreams come…the same lovely dream over and over year after year until the day of our play. That is when things take an unsuspected turn.
