Whispers from Angels

By Ellen J. Cooney

Overview

Is it destiny? Are their dreams trying to tell them something? Or is it just their imaginations... This is a novel of metaphysical fiction that probes the psychological and the spiritual through a cast of characters who get caught up in a web of lies and struggle to navigate the world around them. Among them is a mother whose lies and evasions about the past alienate her daughter, a young woman who is angry and resentful and determined to find the truth on her own; a father with secrets so horrifying it threatens his relationship with his son, and a schizophrenic ex-wife/mother who is very possibly dangerous. Then there is the group of odd but zany people who ostensibly meet to study religion. People who seem normal on the surface… But as the characters' lives intersect, strange things begin to happen... Almost supernatural things… Like having siimilar dreams. But do those dreams carry messages? And are they really being urged toward some unknown, possibly terrifying event, as some suspect? Tensions grow and danger threatens until one fateful night it all comes to a head. Meanwhile, watching from the shadows, are two mysterious figures—whose motives are hidden, but whose influence may decide everything.

Description

Twenty-five years ago a nameless young woman watches from across the street as a fire rages through her attic apartment. Someone wants her dead. Defiant, she vows to fight back… In present day, Rayni Jameson, a recent college grad, simmers with bitter anger towards her mother, Zanna, whose lies and evasions about the past—especially who Rayni's father is—have long infuriated her. Zanna has her reasons, but secrets are like a cancer, and Rayni burns for the truth. Home in Montana for a visit, she searches her mother's attic, where she finds a dog-eared photo of her mom and a little boy taken long ago on a beach. But when asked about it, her mother is evasive, saying only that it was taken somewhere in the Bay Area. Strangely, it almost feels like fate when Rayni has a chance to move to Tiburon—a city near San Francisco: the very place her mother lived as a young woman; even more so when she accidentally meets Nick MacKenzie, whose mother, Angeline, may hold the keys to the past. Yet Nick warns her away from Angeline, saying she is unstable. Maybe even dangerous... But Rayni isn't about to give up. Meanwhile, learning about what her daughter is doing, Zanna becomes frantic. She swore she'd never return to the Bay Area, but knows she must stop Rayni from being drawn into the darkness she herself once escaped. Once there, fate again appears to intercede, when Zanna is befriended by a group of people who ostensibly meet to study religion. They seem normal, caring even... But then strange things begin to happen…almost supernatural things... They are even having similar dreams... But do the dreams truly carry messages? Are they really being urged toward some unknown, possibly terrifying event, as some suspect? Or is it just their imaginations... Meanwhile, watching from the shadows, are two mysterious figures—Pierre and Mrs. Jannes—whose motives are hidden, but whose influence may decide everything.
