Sandra Jones M.Ed, the author of "Where is Dori now?" has always had a special place in her heart for animals and educating children in creative ways. The story was originally written for her grandniece Zuzu and is now available for all to enjoy.
"My first dog, Sandra recalls, was Reggie. He would pull us kids on our skateboards along the streets of my childhood home in Matawan, NJ. When I went to college at Plymouth State University in New Hampshire, I met Maggie Magee. One of my first campus memories was spying Tim, later to become my husband, riding his mountain bike with Maggie running close behind him. Next came Sadie Mae, our golden retriever with short legs and a big appetite. I told stories about Sadie and Maggie's adventures to my 4th grade students. Later, in the 1990's, Sadie loved greeting customers at our bicycle shop. She was a popular addition to Ashland NH's July 4th parade when I dressed her up and pulled her behind me in our Burley trailer."
Then came Nellie Bell, who got her middle name from the bell we hung by the front door. She would bump it with her nose to alert us she needed to go out. Nellie was a beagle. I would take her to gatherings and on hikes with friends as we conceptualized starting, PAREI, a sustainability initiative for our community. For years, Nellie hung out in our pick-up truck watching us install solar energy systems.
After Nellie, we waited for a message from above that would lead us to our next four-legged family member. I'll never forget the day we received a newsletter from Live and Let Live Farm with the rare heading, "Puppies Ready for Adoption". I went on to their website, and there was "Girl Blonde" with a twinkle in her eye. Meeting Dori was one of the best days of our lives. "She wakes up in a good mood everyday", Tim tells our friends about why Dori makes us so happy."
It's Sandra's hope that the joy they feel everyday living with Dori, will jump off the pages and into the hearts of readers from around the world. And that the story of how Dori got adopted and the mini-adventures she takes will become a teaching tool for educators as well as a vehicle to raise needed funds for two animal shelters. (10% of the listed retail cost will be donated equally to Live and Let Live Farm Rescue and Sanctuary in Chichester, NH, USA and the St George Animal Shelter in St George, New Brunswick, Canada.)
