"When I Grow Up, I Want to Be Myself" was inspired by myself and many other little girls who struggle to stay unique in a world where most people look and think alike. Naya, the main character is an eight year old girl who feels ashamed that she is not prepared for her class' career day. She has a realization that although she does not know what she wants to be when she grows up, she knows the type of person she wants to be. This book celebrates diversity, uniqueness, fearlessness, and individualism.

A. Cole is an author who focuses on empowering children with the ability to celebrate uniqueness and individuality. A. Cole Books was founded in 2016 by A. Cole who lives in a suburb outside of Washington, D.C. As a self-published author, I felt compelled to reach an audience who reflects the diverse community that surrounds me. I hope to lend my voice to African-American children's literature and all of American children's literature by showcasing strong minority leads in my stories.
