Walter J. Boyne was inducted into the prestigious National Aviation Hall of Fame on July 21, 2007, in recognition of his many contributions to air and space. More recently he was awarded the Air Force Association's Lifetime Achievement Award. Currently the Chairman of the National Aeronautics Association, he is the former Chairman of the Board of Wingspan, the Air and Space television channel, and President of his own firm, Walter J. Boyne & Associates. The author of 54 books, he is one of the few persons to have had best sellers on both the fiction and the non-fiction list of the New York Times. A career Air Force officer, Boyne retired as a Colonel with 5,000 hours flying time in everything from the T-6 to the B-1B. After his retirement in 1974, he joined the National Air & Space Museum of the Smithsonian Institution. He became Acting Director in 1981 and Director in 1983. Upon his retirement in 1986, he began a third career of writing and consulting. His fourth career, in television, began ten years ago. His consulting clients include museums as well as aviation, publishing and television companies.
A honor graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, with a BSBA, he graduated magna cum laude from the University of Pittsburgh with an MBA. He received an honorary Doctorate of Aeronautical Science from Salem University in West Virginia.
His books have been published in twelve countries. In 2007 he published the second edition of his well received Beyond the Wild Blue, the History of the United States Air Force and Soaring to Glory, the history of the new United States Air Force Memorial. In 2008 the third novel of his new trilogy on the history of jet aviation, Hypersonic Thunder appeared. In 2004, he edited Today's Best Military Writing. In 2003, he published seven books, including Dawn over Kitty Hawk : The Novel of the Wright Brothers; The Influence of Air Power History; Chronicle of Aviation; Operation Iraqi Freedom: What Went Right, What Went Wrong and Why; Rising Tide (co-authored with Gary Weir) the Story of the Russian and Soviet Submarine Force, Aviation 100, Volume III and The Alpha Guide to the Military. . In 2002 he published The Two O'Clock War, the 1973 Yom Kippur War and the American Airlift that Saved Israel and edited the two-volume Air Warfare Encyclopedia. In 2001, he published Aces in Command, The Best of Wings and Classic Aircraft. His three previous books include Brassey's Air Combat Reader, edited with Philip Handleman, published by Brassey and Beyond the Horizons: The Lockheed Story and Beyond the Wild Blue, A History of the USAF, 1947-1997 were published in 1998 and 1997, respectively by St. Martins Press.
His New York Times best sellers include The Wild Blue, the Novel of the Air Force in 1986 and Weapons of Desert Storm in 1991. Books that have sold more than 100,000 copies include The Wild Blue, Trophy for Eagles, Weapons of Desert Storm, The Smithsonian Book of Flight, the Leading Edge and Power Behind the Wheel.
Beyond the Wild Blue has been made into a five part video series of the same name for the History Channel. A previous work Clash of Wings, World War II in the Air has been made into a thirteen-part video series appearing on PBS, Speedvision and Wingspan. Boyne hosted and narrated both of the videos. He is the editor of the Walter J. Boyne Military Aircraft Series for McGraw Hill and a consultant to Discovery Communications and Lockheed Martin.
