About the author

When David Wilson was in grade school, he loved both music and visual art. The creative play of his youth inspired David to design his own board games, mazes, puzzles and adventures for himself and his friends. David studied music at the University of Toronto, completing his four year degree in 1999, and in 2006 he produced and published a guide based on the Kreutzer 42 Studies for violin, in collaboration with violinist Jacques Israelievitch. Two years later he returned to complete his degree in Education. For thirteen years, David taught at public schools in Toronto, teaching music and dipping his toes into the theatre arts by staging musicals for his elementary school students. In 2022, David left teaching full time to publish his writing, and launch his other creative endeavours. David lives in Toronto with his wife, son and two daughters—with jaunts to Helsinki, Finland, where his wife's family lives. Vesper Rowan and the Shadow Dragon is David Wilson's first novel.

Overview

Vesper Rowan has lived her entire life in the human world, never realizing that she was different.

But finding a mysterious unicorn book in her grandfather's collection, followed by a note from an anonymous tipster that her mother (whom she has believed to be dead for years) is still alive, changes everything.

A simple masquerade dance turns into a portal adventure in which Vesper must face and overcome her fears about who she is, her past, and most of all her future.

Vesper Rowan and the Shadow Dragon is a wonderful introduction to portal/epic adventure fantasy novels for younger readers (Middle Grade/YA). This is a tale of friendships, loss, and hope despite the darkness of the world.

Description

Vesper Rowan will face the shadow dragon, just as her grandfather's magic book foretold. The problem is she knows nothing about her family's secret history or that they are from Noominia—a place of beauty and danger, full of fairies, giants, wizards, elves and kobalins. When Vesper reads the forbidden magic book, she opens a portal into Noominia and becomes swept up in her own magical adventure—chased by kobalins, and hunted by a shadow dragon. Can she really be the unicorn in their prophecy? The one who will trade her life to rid Noominia of the shadow dragon?
