Vampire Granny and Other Surprising Stories

By Lura Dymond

Overview

This charming collection of fantasy and science fiction short stories will entertain you and touch your heart. Vampires hiding in plain sight, tree sprites who take on a developer and his huge bulldozers to save their hill, a family stranded in frightening circumstances when their Disney-style wilderness ride breaks down, and a "fake" spiritualist who manages to save her family from the horrors of the Third Reich are some of the characters you will meet. Each story takes you into a different world and on a new adventure.

Description

Let your imagination fly as you are swept away by entertaining characters and their adventures in these fantasy and science-fiction short stories. Granny Evans is known as a sweet old lady who bakes cookies and babysits. None of her neighbors know that she was made a vampire more than 175 years ago in New Orleans. Then her too-handsome, too obviously a vampire son comes for a visit. Is her secret safe? Will the beautiful woman who lives next door fall for his unique brand of charm? Sindra is an initiate in the Cult of the Virgin, using gates to travel to temples in other worlds, when the universe sends her flying in another direction and she ends up at the cookie store in the West Temple Mall. She has to evade an evil flute player and find some golden arches to take her home. (You can probably guess where the golden arches are.) Janey is skipping across time in London with her boy toy, Timmy, when they become embroiled in the 1381 Peasants Revolt. They aren't supposed to change anything in the time they're visiting, but Janey can't help herself when she's needed. Green tree sprites, only eight inches tall, see red when their sacred hill is slated for development. They take on the mighty bulldozers and give the construction supervisor an ulcer. These are only a few of the charming and amazing characters you'll meet.

About The Author

I love to write speculative fiction—asking a "what if" question and pursuing it to the limits of credibility. "What if a child was born on a little-known planet and just kept growing, and growing, and growing?" "What if it were possible to skip lightly through time, experiencing events you only read about in history books?" That's what these stories, mostly developed during my many years in a science fiction writers' group, are all about. I've been a jack-of-all-trades in any job to do with publishing, whether as a staff writer for a magazine (Westways), a communications director for a Girl Scout council, or an editor for a California state agency that manages the court system. For many years, I had my own business as an editor, a proofreader, a writer, an indexer, and a project manager. I have a master's degree in journalism from UCLA. Now, with the freedom of retirement, thinking about characters, plots, and places takes up most of my time, with several novels in various stages of coming to life. Please keep an eye out for them.
