My thoughts were incongruent with my reality. I was not enjoying my life – I was depressed to a point of considering suicide. Perhaps food had once been a friend, but that friend had turned on me. It no longer made me feel good. Now it made me feel worse. I was stuck in a caloric prison with no chance of parole. I wanted to change, but had no idea how to do it.
Several months following that fateful doctor visit for heart palpitations, something shifted. I had never considered the possibility that God might help me break loose from the terrible grip of binging and dieting. I really didn’t believe in God anymore and I certainly didn’t think He cared to help me with something as silly as losing weight. But, what did I have to lose; over a hundred pounds, that’s what.
Diets were always successful for a while, until the fateful day when the words, “One bite won’t hurt” rang in my ears. That always lead me back to rapid weight gain and finally, morbid obesity. This time however, I did not diet. Instead, I reframed the way I looked at eating. I developed a moderate eating plan that I could stick with, and began to enjoy my life! I also found that if I didn’t eat the foods that caused a binge, I wouldn’t binge!
