Trees, Trails, and Tails

It's true—I am a tree hugger. I'm also a dog lover. So, what possessed me to write a book about trees and walking shelter dogs, and why do I think you will enjoy reading along? The truth is, this began as a story of my experiences, but it evolved into much more. I have several objectives for this book. First, I'd like to introduce you to some of the incredible and quirky trees that live right here in Lake County, Ohio. There are twenty 20 locations. Most of these trees are accessible by car, or, with a little leg work, are easily accessible on foot on public land. That land could be a Lake Metropark, a cemetery, state park, or a public roadway. Secondly, by putting your attention on the trees and observing what is around you, I hope to help you find yourself in the present moment, in a peaceful state that is not burdened with thoughts and worries of your past or your future. If you are reading this book and don't live in Lake County, Ohio, you can apply this format to create your own tree list in locations near you. There are also plenty of animal shelters throughout the U.S. and in many countries, and I'm sure you can find one near you that could use your help. Trust me, this is a very fun way to enjoy a day. Add a shelter dog and the experience becomes even more rewarding, and your walking companion will love you for it! In addition, making these visits with a dog is an even deeper experience. Dogs in particular live in the present, so they can help you focus there, too. I have learned a lot from the shelter dogs that I have fostered and walked with. Their perspectives and presence provide welcome companionship. This book is a compilation of my hikes, drives, strolls, and walks through Lake County, Ohio. I have included a brief description of each tree, grove, or forest, and have provided an address. I have also included each on a map of Lake County with a general location of every tree within these pages. There are also maps of various locations. I will also introduce you to the shelter dogs from Lake Humane Society that I have had the pleasure and honor to walk to some of these locations where permitted or have fostered at home. I have learned a lot from them as they are always in the present. I also educate and encourage volunteering at a local shelter in some capacity. Every small act of kindness at an animal rescue shelter makes a big impact. There are beautiful pictures of the trees, forests and the shelter dogs. All but two pictures were taken by me as it happened on our hikes and adventures. This is a very organic book and from the heart. Finally, I plan to donate the net proceeds from this book to the Lake Humane Society in Mentor, Ohio. Thanks for picking up my book and enjoy the journey.
