Tough Love

Modern Noir Romances

By Thomas Shess

Overview

This collection does not claim to solve the mystery of love. It only promises to tell the truth—especially the parts we lie about. It isn't nostalgia for the old noir. It's modern, restless, and intimate—where romance smolders even as the night closes in. If there's a thread running through them, it's simple—love always leaves a scar. Sometimes that's the point.

Description

Noir has always been about more than shadows and guns. At its core, it's about people—trying to hold onto something tender in a world that doesn't make room for tenderness. Love is the risk. Romance is a wager. And sometimes, the payoff comes in the dark. The stories in "Tough Love" trace the edges of that gamble. From backroom betrayals in San Francisco to rain-slick alleys in Paris and Barcelona, men and women collide in ways they can't quite escape. They fall into beds, into trouble, into memory. Some chase passion, some run from it, but all of them are marked by it.

About The Author

Thomas Shess is a veteran West Coast editor and journalist; his career began at the San Francisco Examiner before he went on to serve as editor of several inflight/travel magazines. Eventually, he landed as a top editor at San Francisco Magazine and San Diego Magazine. Later, he went on to become an editor of San Diego Home/Garden Magazine and the founder of North Park News, a community monthly devoted to San Diego's most historic neighborhood. Alongside his journalism, Shess writes fictional works that blend the grit of noir with the tenderness of modern romance. His first novel "Cantina Psalms" maps the hidden corners of San Francisco through mystery and desire, while his new short story collection "Tough Love: Modern Noir Romances" explores the fragile line between passion and consequence. Thomas continues to publish daily arts, literary and culture blogs on PillartoPost.org.
