— 2015 Gelett Burgess Children’s Book Awards —

SILVER MEDALIST (Pre-Teen Fiction)

— 2015 Moonbeam Children’s Awards —

‘Narnia character types and a Stephen King plot make The Cat’s Maw

an absolutely intriguing novel (with) sophisticated, scary, supernatural thrills.

A cat lover’s must-read.’

— VOYA Magazine 2015 TOP SHELF Honoree —

'Burgess leaves readers clawing for the sequel. Kids will enjoy it; adults will love it.'

— KIRKUS Reviews —

'If you are the sort of person who enjoys being the first to know about

something important, it's high time you read this. Because this is important.

For brave young readers as well as their parents.'

—THE GUARDIAN (Children’s) —

'FIVE STARS - haunting fantasy not for the faint of heart.'

‘Few authors can match this one when it comes to grounded ‘surreality’.

It’s a heady mixture handled with deft grace. The prose is lyrical and deceptively complex.

Lo and behold, (Burgess) has returned...and it is brilliant.'

'Young readers (will) fall in love from the first page.'

‘A wonderful mix of surrealism, fantasy, and reality…evocative and gut-wrenching.

There is a dreamlike state that surrounds the novel — a harrowing adventure

(that) is masterfully done.’

— SFBook Reviews —

The Cat’s Maw will take you on an adventure. The story is beautifully written…

entertaining, and full of imagination and vivid detail.

'Cinematic...lyrical...and quite often extraordinary.'

In the sleepy town of Appleton, a young loner follows a stray cat onto the road and is struck by a car. A leg is shattered, a summer is ruined, and the troubled life of Billy Brahm goes from cursed.

When the mysterious cat appears at his bedside, Billy is haunted by strange and prophetic dreams -- the creatures in them speak of Watchers, and Shadows, and the Enemy that Awakens.

Does this impossible realm hold the key to healing the broken boy? Is the golden-eyed cat there to help him...or to make the nightmares come true?

Too frightened to share the truth with his strict adoptive parents, Billy realizes that the only ones he can turn to are the local vet’s daughter, the town's 'crazy cat lady'...

...and a mystical tiger, beckoning from his dreams.

About the author

BROOKE BURGESS was born in a tiny town on the eastern coast of Canada. He's an award-winning storyteller in videogames, interactive fiction, animation, and comic books. Cats had a presence in his home from the very beginning. They became his siblings, friends, and (benevolent) masters. An old graveyard on a nearby hill was a real (and beautiful) thing. This probably influenced his love of (somewhat) scary stories. Brooke loves mythology, travel, really good TV, and frozen yogurt. Many of the things in this book (dreams included) actually happened.

THE CAT'S MAW is Brooke’s first novel.
