The Steppes That Lead Me Home
One Teacher's Journey through the Land of the Blue Sky
by Matthew Bergquist
View author's profile page

Overview

In the fall of 2013, Matt moved from the United States to Mongolia to teach English. The plan was to stay and teach just for a year, but within months, he already knew he would want to stay long-term. And not only that, he knew that Mongolia already had a special place in his heart--it had become his "second home," a place where he felt a sense of purpose and belonging. This book is the story of how this country of steppe-dwellers became Matt's second home, a place he continues to hold dear to this day.

Description

As a kid growing up in America, Matthew didn't feel like he "belonged" anywhere. Shy, introverted, and sometimes quite sensitive, Matthew had a hard time feeling at peace or at home wherever he went. Then, after graduating college, he moved across the Pacific to teach English in Mongolia, a country known for its nomadic huts (called "gets"), brutal winters, and beautiful steppes. It was there, surrounded by a culture and people totally different from his own, where he took one of the most important journeys of his life--one that continues even now, long after leaving Mongolia for his first home in the U.S. Read on to see this ordinary white American man make a new home in the Land of the Blue Sky--and continue his journey "home" to this day--in this story that will both raise your eyebrows and make you smile.
