About the author
Stephanie R. Veloff- Histed (S.H. Raymond) was born in Middleton, WI in 1972. Her and her sister, Julie’s, love of horses began as young children with their $13 pony named Sparky, that lived in the backyard. They began their competitive equestrian careers as children in 4-H and local schooling shows, and grew into zone and national champions as young adults. Their parents always supported their every horsey whim, including financing the boarding of their show horses, until Stephanie decided it was time to take on the responsibility of owning her own barn. In 1999, Stephanie declared her Professional status within the United Stated Equestrian Federation, and the United States Hunter Jumper Association. She opened her own Timeless Farm Hunters and Jumpers Equestrian Facility in Arena, WI, having built it from scratch with the help of her family and husband, Robin. Stephanie and Timeless Farm was very successful in cultivating many champion horses and riders, and also in hosting over 125 shows and riding clinics on the property over the next 14 years. In 2013, the Histed’s, now with their two young human children, decided it was time to make a change and began the process of relocating Timeless Farm to the Ocala area in Florida. This change began to take shape in 2012 when Stephanie sat down at her laptop, and began to compose her self-help book, The Species Theory. It began as just her own form of self-help, during which time the Histed’s were experiencing a Wisconsin Department of Revenue income tax audit based on the Hobby-Loss Rule. The audit was initially just sales tax, but was launched into an income tax audit due to the field auditor, after speaking with Stephanie during a required farm tour, during which Stephanie was medicated for a kidney stone, believed Stephanie was much too laid back about her business. The Histed’s spent nine months and several thousands of dollars in attorney fees to fight the allegation, and the $50,000 penalty, for which they won. The field auditor’s new supervisor admitted that Timeless Farm is “obviously a business, it obviously is not a hobby, we’re sorry, we’re here for you not the other way around.” They dropped the majority of the case but of course did not offer to reimburse the legal fees. Hence The Species Theory being Stephanie’s therapy during this unimaginably stressful period in the Histed’s life. Since having human kids, Stephanie had been taking notes for a few years based on comparing her children’s behavior to the horse’s behavior. She finally had the incentive to put it together, and hopes it will succeed in helping others through their own stressful moments in life.
