The Road to Sunrise

A True Story of Photographs Lost and Found

By Marsha Steckling and Ray Agostinelli

Overview

Six hundred vintage photo negatives. A century-old mystery. One photographer, unnamed. A chance find in a Denver antique shop led to a years-long project of restoration and research into the history of a Coronado, CA estate and a vanished desert mining camp, and the search for a living descendant of a distinguished Civil War general. The Road to Sunrise is the story of what one photographer left behind, and the improbable journey to bring it home.

Description

In 2009, a photographer paid seventy-five dollars for four battered folios in a Denver antique shop — and walked out with 600 century-old negatives and a mystery she couldn't put down. The images told two stories: a wealthy family at ease in their Coronado estate, and a rough mining crew scratching gold from the high desert now known as Joshua Tree National Park. Only one man appeared in both worlds — the photographer himself, unnamed and unknown. What followed was a years-long hunt across genealogy records, historical archives, and the California desert — unearthing surprising links between a Civil War general, a sunken gambling ship, a dead man's desert grave, and a family line on the brink of vanishing. The Road to Sunrise is a restoration story, a detective story, and proof that a photograph never really loses its power to find its way home.
