Overview
The Old Straw Hat is a collection of thirty poems inspired by nature and the love of family and friends. Suzy Wasson's poems explore how immersive observation and quiet reflection bring a renewed appreciation for the world around us, and illustrate the ways in which love received is also a gift to be passed forward. All the author's proceeds from sales of The Old Straw Hat will be donated to GIRLS FIRST (formerly known as St. Augustine's Academy) an afterschool program in Norristown, PA, Suzy helped found. GIRLS FIRST provides homework support, a meal, and enrichment through the arts for K-4th grade students.

Suzy Wasson began working on the poems in her collection The Old Straw Hat shortly after her husband, Sam, passed away in 2021. Her poems in this collection are meditations on grief, nature, family, and friendship. They are about memories of the past sparked by experiences in the present; the joy of spending time with grandchildren in a cabin by a stream; how the quiet observation of a cardinal perched on a phone wire or a half moon through a skylight window renews a sense of peace and love for the world and people around us.
Suzy's collection of poems will appeal to anyone who enjoys spending time in nature observing the power of the ocean, the elegance of birds, the uniqueness of a piece of sea glass. And they will resonate deeply with those who have experienced the grief of losing a loved one. In other words, The Old Straw Hat is about the beauty and fullness of the human condition.
